Titus 2 DEVO: Relationships, Discipleship & Disciplined Living

Chapter 2:
In this chapter, Paul outlines how the baton of faith is to be passed on – from the older teaching the younger! As a pastor, Paul calls Titus to “…teach what is in accord to sound doctrine.” The teachings of the Bible will cause behavior to be in line with belief and Titus is to teach God’s Word! Then he gives examples of how this works:
The older men teach the younger men: ”…set them an example….doing good…be self-controlled …show integrity, seriousness and soundness of speech…”
The older women teach the younger women: “…to be reverent in the way they live, not to be slanderers or addicted to much wine…to love their husbands and children, to be self-controlled and pure, to be busy at home, to be kind, and to be subject to their husbands…”
Slaves be subject to your masters: “…in everything, to try to please them, not to talk back to them, and not to steal from them, but to show that they can be fully trusted…”
Paul concludes by telling Titus, that because of God’s incredible grace, he needs to discipline himself to “…say "No" to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age…” This will take both encouragement and rebuke, but do it regardless of how people treat you.
SO WHAT?!
*As a pastor, letters written to pastors (Titus and 1&2 Timothy) especially grab my attention! I am to both model and teach these things. But they are not just true of pastors but of all believers – you and me! How are you & I passing on the baton of truth to the next generation?
*In what area is it hard for you to say “No” to? Materialism? Entertainment? Sensuality? Living in America we can have whatever we want, wherever we want it and whenever we want it! But the American way is not the Biblical way. It takes discipline & self-control to say no at times. And this character quality needs to be both taught & modeled by YOU & ME!

Titus 1 DEVO: Qualifications for Godly Leadership & Addressing Ungodly Leadership

Introduction:
Paul deals with qualifications to be looked for in church leaders (1:5-9) and then condemns the false teachers who were undermining the work in Crete (1:10-16). In Chapter 2, He gives Titus advice on how to handle the situation there: guidelines on Christian behavior, specifically the aged (1-3), the youth (4-8), and slaves (9-10). Chapter 2:11-3:2 gives the theological implications of Christian living in the community. Chapter 3:4-7 is a reminder of the transformation that comes from the gospel through Christ. Paul then closes with a charge, personal remarks, counsel and a benediction (3:8-15).

Chapter 1: Qualifications for Godly Leadership & Addressing Ungodly Leadership
Paul lists 17 character qualities that church leaders especially should demonstrate:
1. Blameless – not perfection but pursuit of holiness.
2. Husband of but one wife – a one woman man. Rules out some divorced people.
3. A man whose children believe and are not wild & disobedient – if a man can’t lead his own family, don’t let him lead in the church!
4. Not overbearing – authoritative not authoritarian.
5. Not quick-tempered – duh, don’t put angry peeps in leadership.
6. Not given to drunkenness – having A drink is ok, but having TO drink is not.
7. Not violent – again, duh.
8. Not pursuing dishonest gain – integrity with finances.
9. Hospitable – does he open up his home, like people, etc…
10. Loves what is good – another pursuit issue.
11. Self-controlled – does he watch his mouth, turn from evil, deny himself, etc…
12. Upright – how is he viewed by others?
13. Holy – not perfection but pursuit.
14. Disciplined – Does he have goals & values he pursues?
15. Must hold firmly to trustworthy message – does he believe & teach the Bible?
16. Encourage others – does he tear down or lift up others?
17. Refute those who oppose the truth – does he correct wrong teaching?
For the remainder of the chapter, Paul addresses false teaching & those who do not qualify as leaders according to the qualifications just listed. They teach lies (#17) “for the sake of dishonest gain” (#8). “Liars, evil brutes, lazy gluttons” – (#1, #4, #10, #13, #14). ”To the pure, all things are pure….” – (#13). “They claim to know God, but by their actions they deny him.” – (#1, actually all of them!).
SO WHAT?!
*This list of godly qualities is not just for Christian leaders, but for all who claim Jesus as their Savior. Take some time today to meditate on these qualities. Which ones are you doing ok at? Which ones need work? Don’t know? Ask a close friend or family member – and be willing to take their answer!
*Is there any way in which you or I are denying Jesus by our actions? Oh Lord, please show us and conform us to YOU!

Philippians 4 DEVO: Whatever!~

Chapter 4:
We’ve all been in a conversation with someone where they’ve said in sarcasm “whatever.” Well, this is Paul’s “whatever” chapter – only sarcasm is not intended!
We begin with a “cat fight” – 2 ladies not getting along – and Paul is pleading with them to do so, and even asking “loyal yokefellow” to step in and referee a bit! Christian love is to be a hallmark of how a believer lives because it shows love and leaves a great testimony of Jesus. So Euodia & Syntyche – chill! Paul’s advice? “Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near…..prayer……with thanksgiving…..the peace of God.” Praying, focusing on the Lord, being thankful and taking the focus off of self is always helpful in conflict!
And here is what Paul says to focus on: “…whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.” In addition, Paul says “I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want.” Contentment is another way to avoid selfish conflict!
Paul concludes by thanking them for their gifts and assuring them that God will meet THEIR needs as well!
SO WHAT?!
*Ok, who was your last fight with? Side note – Jean & I don’t fight, we have “serious fellowship.” (he, he…) Actually, sometimes it’s intense fellowship!~ Back to the question – what was your fight about? Usually it’s pretty dumb stuff, or at least, misunderstandings. Regardless, seek to work it out! I’m not sure how much I’ve done right in our marriage, but only once in 19 years have Jean & I not worked it our before we went to bed – and that time we worked it out the next day. Totally helps in keeping accounts short and thoughts from brewing “evil stew”! Don’t let the sun go down on your anger….Ephesians 4:26
*Contentment – not really a part of the American way huh?! Well, It is God’s way. What is something you could get if you wanted but that you can choose to do without this week? Maybe it’s eating out or a new computer or cell phone or you fill in the blank. How about using “whatever” money you don’t spend on that this week and investing it in the Lord?! Maybe memorize today’s “whatever passage” so you can remember it when you face circumstances?!

Philippians 3 DEVO: The Best Prize Ever!

Chapter 3:
In this chapter, Paul gives warning, his personal example and shares his heart.
Paul called Judaizers (Jews who insisted on circumcision) “dogs” – a term used to describe Gentiles. So……...ummmm…………this was not a complement! He goes on to say that if you want to take confidence in fleshy stuff, man I gotcha’ beat: “…circumcised on the eighth day, of the people of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of Hebrews; in regard to the law, a Pharisee; as for zeal, persecuting the church; as for legalistic righteousness, faultless.” No one could contend with Paul in a battle of “religious accomplishments.” So – what does Paul call all these so called “accomplishments”? Rubbish – and ya’ want to know what this word means? Dung! Crap! Get the picture?!
Knowing Jesus & Making Him Known (this would be a great purpose statement for a student ministry ☺) is far more valuable: “But whatever was to my profit I now consider loss for the sake of Christ. What is more, I consider everything a loss compared to the surpassing greatness of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them rubbish, that I may gain Christ and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ—the righteousness that comes from God and is by faith. I want to know Christ…”
Because this is a process, Paul continues: “Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already been made perfect, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me…..Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.”
– BEST PRIZE EVER!
Paul concludes by sharing his heart for the lost: “For, as I have often told you before and now say again even with tears, many live as enemies of the cross of Christ.” Paul’s heart was broken for those who would not believe.
SO WHAT?!
*So, what trophies have you won? What awards hang on your wall? What is to your profit? Oh Lord help us today to lay them all aside in comparison to our relationship with YOU! Give us daily the passion & desire to Know You & make You Known! Amen.
*What bums us out? Things not going our way? A dent in the car? Not getting something we want? How about our family, friends & neighbors not knowing Jesus and on their way to hell? As horrible as it sounds, it’s true. Lord may THIS break our heart the most – so much so that we will share Jesus with whomever we can!

Philippians 2 DEVO: Humility, Humility, Humility…

Chapter 2:
This chapter totally ROCKS!
Four times he uses “if” in verse one, and it is better translated “since” because we do have encouragement, comfort, fellowship, tenderness & compassion IN Christ! Since this is true we should be “like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and purpose.” And because being precedes doing, then we are reminded how to act – not with…
- selfish ambition = wanting what others have
- vain conceit = prideful about what we have
Instead – in HUMILITY (this is the key) – consider others better than ourselves! Not our natural attitude but a supernatural one! And are you ready for an attitude adjustment?
OUR ATTITUDE should be the same as that of Christ Jesus:
- Who being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, = Jesus had the right to His “Godness” but did not exercise that right!
- But made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. = this is the kenosis, the emptying of Himself. Not sure what all he emptied or gave up (certainly some knowledge – Matthew 24:36) but is was a lot!
- And being found in appearance as a man he humbled himself and became obedient to death – even death on a cross! = Humility & obedience are still great character qualities in God’s eyes!
And as a result, God exalted Jesus!
So how do we exercise humility?
- With fear, trembling, without complaining or arguing and sacrificially – even to death!
Paul then concludes by giving two living examples of humility:
Timothy – “…no one else like him, who takes a genuine interest in your welfare. For everyone looks out for his own interests, not those of Jesus Christ.”
Epaphroditus – “brother, fellow worker and fellow soldier, who is also your messenger, whom you sent to take care of my needs. For he longs for all of you and is distressed because you heard he was ill….welcome him ….honor men like him”
SO WHAT?!
*PRIDE – It started in the garden and is still the root of most sin! On the pride-humility scale, where do you locate yourself? What are we willing to give up for Jesus, the One who gave up everything for ALL of us?!
*If actions speak louder than words, then attitudes speak louder still. How’s the attitude today? Do you need an AA class? (Attitude Adjustment)
*Look at what Paul wrote about Tim & Epapy – WOWSA!~! What would other write about you in a letter? What would you like them to write? What needs to change in our lives in order for these two questions to have the same answer???

Philippians 1 DEVO: Gracias & Testimonial...

Introduction:
This is one of three of Paul’s letters that he wrote from prison (also Ephesians, Colossians & Philemon). That is especially significant when you consider that the theme of this letter is JOY! Only when we have God’s Holy Spirit and God’s perspective on things can we experience joy in all circumstances.
Then church at Philippi was started by Paul on his second missionary journey and is the most personal letter that he wrote to a church. It includes one of the most important passages in the New Testament on the “kenosis” of Christ = His self-emptying or self-humiliating (2:5-8). And this letter contains a lot of familiar verses that have been memorized by many over the years.

Chapter 1: Gracias & Testimonial…
Yeah, I recently got back from a Mexico missions ministry, so I’m still using the little Spanish I know! Anyway, Paul kicks off this letter, like many of his letters, by giving thanks. He is extremely grateful for their “partnership in the gospel from the first day until now…” The believers in Philippi had helped Paul financially at least twice (4:16) and Paul saw that as sharing in the work of Christ! And with that he gives these words of encouragement: “…he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.”
Paul then gives an amazing personal testimony of how being in prison is advancing the work of Christ: “Now I want you to know, brothers, that what has happened to me has really served to advance the gospel. As a result, it has become clear throughout the whole palace guard and to everyone else that I am in chains for Christ. Because of my chains, most of the brothers in the Lord have been encouraged to speak the word of God more courageously and fearlessly.” Paul saw in his imprisonment not punishment but possibility! And as a result, unbelievers believed and believers shared their faith – COOL GOD STUFF!
Paul attitude was amazing too! He didn’t care what motives people had for sharing Christ – he was just grateful they were! He was also confident that God would give him courage to be unashamed. And he didn’t matter to him if it cost him his life – “For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain.”
So, he concludes with “conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ.” In other words, whatever our circumstances, live for Christ! Even if – or better yet – even when it means suffering. And oh yeah, verse 29 probably does not top the list of our memorized verses but it is true regardless!
SO WHAT?!
*What circumstances are burdening you and overwhelming you right now? Let’s not allow the enemy to rob us of the joy we have knowing that Jesus is with us to help us face whatever we face! Pray and move forward in HIS strength!
*Fill in the blank: For me, to live is__________.... What did you put? Success? Football? Being rich? School? (ok, probably not) Take a look at where in your heart you spend your hours & dollars - that is a good indicator!

Philemon DEVO: Forgiveness & Responsibility

PHILEMON:
2 Corinthians 5:17 reads “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!” As true as this is, it does not take away from our responsibilities as a Christian. Onesimus, a slave in the Roman empire, had stolen from his master Philemon & had run away. Somehow, he crossed the path of Paul who led him to faith in Jesus Christ. Now Onesimus, as a believer, had a duty to go back to his master Philemon. The punishment for what Onesimus had done was death, so Paul writes to Philemon asking for mercy & grace.
This is not a letter on guidelines for masters and slaves. It’s not a letter denying Philemon’s rights as a slave owner over Onesimus. It’s not even a letter against the evil slave system. This is a letter of forgiveness, a letter begging for mercy & grace from Philemon toward a new believer who had been freed from sin through Jesus Christ!
Paul could have used his position to order Philemon , but instead “yet I appeal to you on the basis of love. I then, as Paul—an old man and now also a prisoner of Christ Jesus— I appeal to you for my son Onesimus who became my son while I was in chains. Formerly he was useless to you, but now he has become useful both to you and to me.” Faith, not force, is used. “Onesimus” means “useful, beneficial.” By stealing & running away he had ruined his name and dishonored his master. But because we are made new in Christ, Onesimus could live up to his name again. So much so that Paul says “I would have liked to keep him with me so that he could take your place in helping me while I am in chains for the gospel.”
Paul knew that Onesimus had a responsibility toward Philemon that needed to be fulfilled, so he sent him back to Philemon with this letter asking that Onesimus be welcomed back as both a slave and a brother in Jesus! Paul includes a touch of God’s sovereignty (God being in control) as well: “Perhaps the reason he was separated from you for a little while was that you might have him back for good— no longer as a slave, but better than a slave, as a dear brother.” How deeply does Paul feel about this? So much so that he offers to pay personally whatever Onesimus owes! And by the way Philemon, you owe me – you came to Christ as a result of my ministry as well!
Paul concludes with his confidence that Philemon will do even more that he is asking him to do!
SO WHAT?!
*What have you (or I) done that deserves punishment? Whatever it is, we always hope for mercy & grace don’t we?!~! YES! Why not take a moment right now and thank God that HE doesn’t give us what we deserve (eternal death & separation from Him forever because of our sin)!
*Is there a responsibility that you have not been fulfilling that you need to make right? Do it today, even if it costs you, because it is your duty as a believer in Jesus to do right.
*Often times in the midst of a trial we cannot see the larger picture of what God is trying to accomplish. What are you facing right now that you need God’s perspective on? Is there a relationship? Is there a situation? Ask God today to help you see things the way He does! And lets never stop asking for grace & mercy – God LOVES to give it!

Colossians 4 DEVO: Application of Our Higher Calling & Final Words

Chapter 4:
Paul concludes Colossians by giving some practical ways that “setting our hearts on things above” is demonstrated. He finishes up on authoritative relations hips with masters by reminding them to be “right and fair” because they too have a Master in heaven!
This higher calling demands a devotion to prayer (2-4). We must never lose sight that we don’t stand a chance without God and we need to go to Him in everything! And we should do so with an attitude of both gratefulness and caution (watchfulness).
Our higher calling also affects our witness: “Be wise in the way you act toward outsiders; make the most of every opportunity. Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone.” (5-6) We are to be wise in both actions and speech! We must realize that hearing & receiving the good news from us can TOTALLY TRANSFORM their lives for eternity! Don’t hesistate to share Christ with someone, but when we do, we must be gracious & tasteful about it. And if they don’t make a decision, well, that’s not our role but God’s. We just keep praying!
Paul concludes the letter with words about those in ministry with him: Tychicus, Onesimus, Aristarchus, Mark, Jesus/Justus, Epaphras, Luke, Demas (who deserted Paul later), Archippus, etc…
SO WHAT?!
*Life is not fair – period. But it is good to BE as fair with others as possible. How are you & I being fair with our friends? Our family? Those who work for us? Etc…
*When was the last time you shared Jesus with someone? We are to make the most of every opportunity because it may be their or our last chance! Let’s take the 48 hour challenge (again) together! Lets ask God to give us an opportunity to share Jesus with someone by Wednesday! And I’d love to hear know how it went with each of y’all!
*Finally, if Jesus were writing a letter to those in ministry he’d like to thank, would you be in it? What would He write about you or me? “dear brother, faithful minister, fellow servant, a comfort to me, prayer warrior”??????

Colossians 3 DEVO: A Higher Calling

Chapter 3:
Now Paul turns from truths about God to the application of these truths. Yep – it’s the “So What” part of his letter, or in more current terms, “there’s an app for that!”
“Since then…” – Because Jesus is enough, because Jesus is God, because Jesus is before and above ALL things, then we are called to “…set your hearts on things above……..Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.” And how do we do this? At least 3 ways:
1) “Put to death whatever belongs to your sinful nature…” – The way we used to live before Jesus came into our lives is to end. Kill it! Take off the old self and put on the new self
2) “…clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.” – Taking off the old and putting on the new involves changes in our attitudes! We are also to bear with and forgive each other!
3) “Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts…” – Unity & peace, not competition & comparison are to come first now.
Then Paul explains how this works itself out in relationships: Wives to husbands, children to parents, fathers to children, slaves to masters – all in appropriate submission & obedience as “It is the Lord Christ you are serving.”
SO WHAT?!
*During this past week, have our minds been on “things above” or have they been on our summer plans? Earning money to buy something? A vacation? Etc… God wants us to be transformed by the renewing of our minds! Let’s ask Him to help us to daily refocus our attention towards Him!
*What did you clothe yourself with this morning? Hopefully something (he, he)! Seriously, we take time each day to pick out what we physically wear, but what do we clothe ourselves with spiritually each day? How about putting a sign in your closet that says this: “Don’t leave spiritually naked today – clothe myself with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness & patience!” I’ll bet it will help!

Colossians 2 DEVO: Jesus Trumps False Teaching

Chapter 2:
Paul ended chapter one saying that he labored/struggled to teach people the truth about Jesus. In this chapter he explains how that looks as he combats the false teachings going around. He wanted them to “know the mystery of God, namely, Christ…”
He reminds them to stay rooted in what he taught them about Jesus and to “See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the basic principles of this world rather than on Christ.” Some Greeks would use the stars or traditions to determine their religious practices. These are misleading and not Biblical!
The next verse is an amazingly clear verse that Jesus is God: “For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form…” I’m always amazed how a Jehovah’s Witness can read this and say how it doesn’t mean that. Why? Because they’ve been taken captive! We need to fight for them to be released!
When we were dead in sin, God made us alive in Jesus and forgave all our sins. As a result, legalistic systems & the worship of angels are not to be – “the reality, however, is found in Christ.” Those who teach otherwise have “…lost connection with the Head…”
SO WHAT?!
*What are some of the hollow & deceptive philosophies in our culture? Being good enough to get to heaven, going to church or RSM, giving money, Jehovah’s Witnesses, Mormonism, etc…. are all ways the enemy uses to deceive! Stand up for truth today so both you and others won’t be deceived!
*What application does Jesus being God have for your life & mine? Let’s marinate on this one today!

Colossians 1 DEVO: Jesus is God!

Introduction:
Like Ephesians, Philippians & Philemon, Colossians was written during Paul’s first time in prison while in Rome. There was false teaching going on which was a mix of Jewish legalism, Greek philosophy and Eastern mysticism (worshipping angels, visions, etc…).So Paul writes this letter to combat these things. The theme of this letter that Jesus is both sufficient (enough) and supreme (over & before all)!
Colossians is very similar to Ephesians. Both letters are broken into 2 equal parts with the first half being doctrianal and the second half being applicational. Both books also cover similar topics.

Chapter 1: Jesus is God!
I was taught in Bible college, and still remember, that whenever someone is doubting the deity (being God) of Jesus, take them to Romans 1, Hebrews 1, John 1, Revelation 1 & Colossians 1. Each of these passages speak of Jesus being God.
Paul begins by giving thanks for their faith, hope and witness for Jesus Christ – each of which is founded in grace & truth!
Then he launches into an amazing passage on Jesus! He is:
- “…the image of the invisible God…” – the exact representation! In other words, Jesus IS God!
- “…the firstborn over all creation.” – this is not that He was a created being, but that Jesus has all the rights belonging to the firstborn because He was before and is over all creation!
- “For by him all things were created: …by him and for him.” – Jesus was with God the Father and God the Holy Spirit in the beginning creating everything! And it was all created FOR Him as well!
- “He is before all things, and in him all things hold together.” – Not only is Jesus before all things, but He’s the one who hold everything together!
- “And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead…” – Jesus is the firstborn = the first one to rise from the dead with a resurrection body! Why? “…so that in everything he might have the supremacy.”
“For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him, and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross.” – We were separated from God and HE brought us back to Him! What a deal!
Paul concludes with two of the verses I have for my job description: “We proclaim him, admonishing and teaching everyone with all wisdom, so that we may present everyone perfect in Christ. To this end I labor, struggling with all his energy, which so powerfully works in me.” My goal is to point people to Jesus through His Word so that I can see every student I’ve ever influenced in heaven someday! And man, it’s hard work, but God’s Holy Spirit is the one working hard in me toward accomplishing this!
SO WHAT?!
*Is Jesus enough (sufficient) for you? Often times we fill emptiness in our lives with things or other people but JESUS wants to be our everything! Lets ask Him to make us increasingly more aware that HE is enough!
*If I am created FOR Jesus, then I am to be used for His purposes not mine! Take a moment and look at your daily schedule. How much of it is filled with His purposes and how much is filled with my own purposes?
*When we are passionate about something, we work hard at it! That is what Paul is saying in 28-29. Do you work hard at being God’s Ambassador (Ephesians 2:10)? Lord, give us a passion for the things YOU are passionate about!

Ephesians 6 DEVO: Submission & the Spiritual Battle

Chapter 6:
“Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. "Honor your father and mother"—which is the first commandment with a promise— "that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth." Ok, so how many of your parents have made you memorize these verses? Yeah well, Drew & Jessica have had to learn them too! The promise if you do obey is both quality life (“go well”) and quantity life (“long life”). And yes students, dad has a big responsibility here as well: “Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.” As a dad, this is a great reminder. But students, even if you have a dad who overbearingly upsets you, that doesn’t not make you exempt from the command to obey (darn).
Paul then turns to slave & masters. Now I know this may not be as relevant now, but if you consider your employers as masters, it certainly is relevant. We are to work hard to please both them & God!
Paul concludes by preparing his readers for the spiritual battle! He reminds us of a number of things:
- That our strength is in the LORD – not ourselves (10).
- That our BATTLE is not with people but with Satan and his demons (11-12).
- That we must PUT ON the full armor of God for protection (13)
- That we must STAND FIRM with truth & what is right (14)
- That our FEET should be out sharing the good news (15)
- That our FAITH acts like a shield (16) and our SALVATION protects our renewed mind (17).
- That our weapon is the WORD of GOD (17).
I’ve always been told that the Word of God is our only offensive weapon, but I believe there is another: PRAYER! It’s mentioned 5 times in 18-20: Pray, Pray, Pray!!! Prayer and the Word of God are both offensive weapons we are to familiar with if we are going to fight strong in the Lord!
SO WHAT?!
*Why not take some time today and honor your parents. Maybe do something without being asked (ok, they may have a heart attack), or let them know how much you appreciate them or pray for them. Here’s a prayer thought: For the most part, we will grow up to be much like our parents – good or bad! Since this is highly likely, then we need to pray that our parents be like Jesus so we will be too! Let’s pray it!

Ephesians 5 DEVO: Imitators or Imitation?

Chapter 5:
What do Sweet & Low, Little Debbie Swiss Cakes & Mellow Yellow all have in common? They’re fakes! Imitation! They’re not sugar, Ho Ho’s and certainly not Mountain Dew! Paul begins with “Be imitators of God………..and live a life of love…” The word for imitators is mimos – it’s where we get our English word “mimic” and in this context it means to follow, to be like. Imitation makes external changes & tries to look like the real deal, Imitators, on the other hand, have internal changes that occur because of the Holy Spirit’s presence in their lives! Paul says at least four things about this. First, people who aren’t changed internally by God will not make it to heaven (5-7). Second, light = good, darkness = bad! (8-14) Because believers have been called out of darkness into light (1 Peter 2:9), we should live like it. Period. Third, imitating God keeps us from wasting our lives (15-17). We are to “make the most of every opportunity because the days are evil.” In other words, our time will soon be up on this planet, don’t let wine control you but the Holy Spirit! Finally, Paul gives evidences of a Spirit-controlled & changed life (18-21). Fellowship, worship, thankfulness and submission are all signs of being Spirit-controlled! Then Paul concludes with what mutual submission looks like: wives to husbands, husbands to Lord, children to parents (ch 6), slaves to masters (ch 6).
SO WHAT?!
*When, where and in what area is it most difficult for you (& I) to be an imitator of God? Identify it and then ask God’s Holy Spirit to change us in these areas!
*Since the time when you, by faith, believed & received Jesus, what areas of your life have you seen change? Take a moment and thank God for those changes! Then be bold and ask Him to show you other areas where He desires change!
*How ya’ doing with submission? Parent? Teachers? Speed Limit signs? Submission says a lot about our character.

Ephesians 4 DEVO: _nity - Top Priority

Chapter 4: _nity – Top Priority
You guessed it – it’s not unity without “U”!
It’s transition time. The first 3 chapters lay down some truths and beginning in chapter 4 Paul says, “I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received.” The truths of God have always been meant to be lived out, to be applied. Paul had already told the Corinthians that “Knowledge puffs up, but love builds up” and we see that same truth being taught here in regards to how we treat one another. I see four principles from the first 16 verses:
1) Unity depends on love that comes from character. We are to be “completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love.”
2) Unity begins with unity with God. Seven times in 3-6 the word “one” is used in relation to the Lord.
3) Unity brings diversity of gifts – just “as Christ apportioned it.” Apostles, Prophets, Evangelists, Pastors, Teachers – all differ, but one purpose: “to prepare God's people for works of service…”
4) Unity demands maturity in our growth. If we are gonna’ have the same goals as believers, we need to understand Bible truths more & more.
Paul finishes the chapter with a contrast of the old life & new life. The old life involved falsehood, deceitful desires, anger, stealing, unwholesome talk, etc… But “In Christ” we are to speak truthfully, not deceive or steal, etc…
Much of this happens by watching what we say: “Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.” Don’t be angry, bitter, etc… with others, that saddens God. Instead, “Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.”
SO WHAT?!
*Do you get along with fellow believers? Or do you resent them? Hey, let’s remember, we’re on the same team – the body of Christ – and the enemy would love to get us at each other and keep our focus off Jesus! Let’s ask forgiveness for acting selfish in the body and that God would give us a spirit of love for each other.
*How are you involved in “works of service that God has for you? In what ways are you helping prepare others to serve God? Both are necessary and commanded. Lord help us o passionate about the things YOU are passionate about!
*A lot of conflict could be avoided if we would just obey verses 29 & 32! My mom used to always say to me, “If you can’t say anything nice, don’t say anything at all.” Ha – she was paraphrasing verse 29! I believe that the more we do this, the more unified we will be!
*So how do we change? Well, according to vs 22, it’s a killer! Die to the old ways, BUT be resurrected to new living – and it starts in our minds!!!

Ephesians 3 DEVO: "CHRCH"

Chapter 3:
“For this reason…” = therefore = because of the Gospel, I’m in prison for Christ’s sake! Paul has no problem as to the reason why he is in prison. He then explains three “M’s”:
The MYSTERY (2-6) – “is that through the gospel the Gentiles are heirs together with Israel, members together of one body, and sharers together in the promise in Christ Jesus.” God’s grace now extends to ALL who believe & receive! Heirs, members, sharers – great stuff!
The MINISTRY (7-13) – We are servants and ambassadors, representing our Lord and we’ve been given the great privilege of helping people get right with God! Wow - more great stuff!
The MESSAGE (10) – How does God desire to accomplish this ministry? “Through the CHURCH – all believers, you and me! We are the means to accomplish God’s desire that “none should perish and all come to repentance” – 2 Peter 3:9. So…..are you ready for this one…… bottom line…….It’s not Church without “U”! The title is correct, not misspelled…..he, he…. Ok – maybe I’m stretching it, but if you & I are not involved in God’s good work, we are disobedient to His call on our lives! People need to Know Jesus and Make Him Known!
Paul finishes with incredible prayer for the Ephesian believers. God is totally “able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us…”
SO WHAT?!
*When was the last time you shared the “mystery” – the good news of Jesus with someone? Last week? Last month? Last year? Ask God for an opportunity to share Christ today and then the boldness to do it. Then let me know how it went – I’d love to hear from you!
*In what ways are you allowing God to “…strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being…” Spending time in the Bible? Prayer? Witnessing? Serving?

Ephesians 2 DEVO: Old Life vs. New LIfe

Chapter 2:
This chapter contrasts a person’s life BEFORE they by grace thru faith believe in Christ, with a person’s life AFTER believing in Christ. It serves as a great reminder because I’m a good forgetter!
“As for you, you were dead…” Ok, so I’m pretty sure this is not like Princess Bride’s “He’s only mostly dead.” The Bible teaches us that before we knew Jesus as Savior, our ability to change our situation was zip – dead people can’t don anything! 100% of my salvation is from God!
So how do we relate to the world, the devil and the flesh?
THE WORLD: “…in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world…” Before Christ, we had no choice but to follow the value system of this world: looking out for #1, God as the center of the universe is a lie (Romans 1:25), etc… IN Christ, our new relationship with the world involves things like: Being in the world but not of it, realizing we don’t belong here, we’re foreigners, etc…
THE DEVIL: “…you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient.” Before Christ we had no choice but to follow temptation. Now, IN Christ, Satan has no authority in our lives. His deceptions to procrastinate the work of the Lord or compromise our beliefs don’t need to be followed!
THE FLESH: “All of us also lived………gratifying the cravings of our sinful nature and following its desires and thoughts.” Lust ruled before Christ, but IN Christ we’ve been given His Holy Spirit living in us to say NO to ungodliness (Titus 2:11-14). It is a battle, I know, but one that God wants us to fight!
“But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ…” – Whoohoo! Grace, Grace, Grace – it’s all by Grace – If we had something to do with it, we’d brag! And all for the purpose “to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” Paul finishes saying our true citizenship is now in heaven with God. We were far from Him, (separated), “objects of wrath” and have now been brought near (reconciled) through “the blood of Christ!”
SO WHAT?
*Of the three – the world, the devil, the flesh – which one do you battle most with? How ya’ doing? Are you engaged (Titus 2:11-14) or are you a POW? Remember – God has already won the battle, so we are not fighting for victory but from victory!
*Does hearing that we have ZIP to do with our salvation bother you? It doesn’t need to if we truly realize that we were dead and that dead people can’t do anything! Our acceptance before God is never based on our performance - Whew!
*How are you involved in the good works God has for you? You have great significance as a member of the body of Christ. If you’re not serving in your church in some way, purpose to get involved this week. If you don’t know how, maybe ask your parents, pastors, mentors, etc…

Ephesians 1 DEVO: The "Doctrinal Hall of Fame"

Introduction:
WHO AM I?
If we’re honest, most of us struggle with identity issues – significance, security. Parents, peers, school, culture and teachers are just some of the mirrors we look into in our search for who we are. For many, this is painful. There’s a song that came out when I was in high school called “At Seventeen” that most of you won’t know but the words still cut as Janice Ian shares her painful search for identity.
If you are a believer and you struggle with these things, then this letter is for you! The book of Ephesians describes a believer’s position IN CHRIST (Chapters 1-3) and then the results (or application) of that position (Chapters 4-6).

Chapter 1:
The first 14 verses in Ephesians are AMAZING! You could do a good 7-10 studies on these verses but blasted, I have only one! So here goes:
“Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ.” Everything we need to live a life for God, to be restored to fellowship with God and with others has been given us IN CHRIST (this phrase used 10 times in first 13 verses)! The moment we believe, we receive! Then Paul goes on to explain those spiritual blessings:
ELECTION (4-5a, 11-12) – This is a reality, a fact. HE took the initiative. There was nothing about us and He chose us in Him. For what purpose? To be “holy & blameless in His sight.” and “for the praise of his glory.”
ADOPTION (5-6) – Again, there was nothing about us, God did not need you or me, but He wanted to make us His kids (“in accordance with His pleasure and will”) and so He did.
REDEMPTION (7a) – This is a deliverance, a ransom paid by a price. In other words, God bought us back. How? And what was the price? “…through his blood…” Jesus died to pay the penalty for your sins and mine!
FORGIVENESS (7-10) – of our sins! And the qualifier? “in accordance with the riches of God's grace…” Being chose, adopted, redeemed & forgiven has nothing to do with our performance but is all by GRACE!~
SALVATION (13a) – How is a person saved? “…you also were included in Christ when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation. Having believed…” When you hear the Word of God and by faith you believe, then you receive!
MARKED/SEALED (13b-14) – This is a guarantee, a pledge, a down payment. The word used speaks of an engagement ring. When I asked Jean to marry me, I gave her an engagement ring. It wasn’t the full wedding band, but a promise, a deposit of what was yet to come. When we believe & receive, God deposits His Holy Spirit in us as a promise that He will finish what He started. And someday in heaven we will be perfected!
INHERITANCE (14) – All we are and will enjoy as children of the King! Being the King’s kid has benefits that are out of this world.
The Father elects & adopts, the Son redeems, forgives, saves & gives an inheritance and the Holy Spirit is our seal – the Trinity at work! WOWSA! This is great stuff!
After all this it should cause us to pray & give thanks and that is exactly what Paul concludes the chapter doing – that we would “know Him better.” Another reason why Knowing Jesus is the first part of my life goal of “Knowing Jesus and Making Him Known.”
SO WHAT?!
*Let’s take some time today and thank God for all the spiritual blessings we have in Christ. Go ahead, list them out – I Double Dog Dare Ya’!
*How do you view yourself, your identity? Often we can compare ourselves with others. And certainly our culture seeks the best looking, smartest, most talented, etc…. But I am so glad that my acceptance before God is NOT based on my performance! IN CHRIST I have been given a new IDENTITY – I am accepted by God and adopted into His family because of faith in Jesus Christ! I’m royalty! I’m the King’s kid! So are ALL who trust in Him alone to be saved from their sins! Now that beats any “self-esteem” talk you or I could ever receive!

20 Years of Student Ministry in Katy, Texas (June 7, 1990 – June 7, 2010)

I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who has given me strength, that he considered me faithful, appointing me to his service. Even though I was once a blasphemer and a persecutor and a violent man, I was shown mercy because I acted in ignorance and unbelief. The grace of our Lord was poured out on me abundantly, along with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus. Here is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners—of whom I am the worst. – 1 Timothy 1:12-15

Ok, so It really doesn’t seem that long ago that I graduated from CCU, packed up a budget rental van with all my stuff (I could have still seat 6) and headed to a small suburb just west of Houston called Katy. WOWSA - It has been the ride of my life!
God didn’t waste much time letting me know I needed help and within a month I began to date the girl I’ve been married to for almost 19 years! Jean – you are my girlfriend, my best friend, my lover, my partner in ministry, my first ministry and tons more – I totally love you and owe you big-time! Drew & Jessica – you both ROCK, crack me up and are my favorite two students in the whole world!
I have been extremely privileged to have worked with some of the best people in the world – pastors, youth workers, elders, deacons, fellow church members, all those who have served in student ministry with me and of course my heroes – each of the students I’ve been able to know!
A lot has changed in Katy since 1990 and yet much is still the same – students continue to need Jesus! I still feel like a rookie in this student ministry league and here are some of the things I’ve learned:
- Love your spouse & family first: If I fail here, I fail.
- Envision the potential of each student: Don’t pull out your adult calculator and tell them something can’t be done. Encourage them to go for it!
- Keep pointing people to JESUS – He is the one who is great, not me.
- If you have a guys night out at a hockey game, be sure it’s not Hooters night.
- Go to the BIBLE for everything. And if you don’t know, don’t snow – just tell ‘em and then find the answer together.
- Character trumps messages every time: Most of us can’t name the top 3 messages we’ve heard but are quick to name the top 3 people who have influenced us.
- Planting your youth professor as a bum at a roadside park, giving him money & a ride and then having him show up at retreat to introduce him as our speaker for the weekend is THE BOMB!
- Be a cheerleader for the outcasts: God is! Students who don’t fit in anywhere else should be welcomed in church & in student ministry!
- Dressing a youth leader in drag will always get you a special meeting with your pastor.
- Be a lifer in student ministry – long-haul benefits are huge for Jesus & students! Trust, stability, etc..
- If you’re gonna’ pass out “safe sex condoms” it’s better to ask forgiveness than permission, and yes, plan on another special meeting with your pastor.
- A cheerful heart is good medicine! Life is too short to be a grumpy poop!
- Remember who we are: I’m not Jesus (you knew that), I’m not a student’s parent (by the way, still their #1 influence), I’m a “significant other” – But BE significant!
- Only two things in life last forever – the souls of men & women and God & His Word. Spend your life in these two!
- Don’t just play with students – my games can’t compete with the Amazing Race, Survivor, etc… So – play games but give them God & His Word because our world can’t compete with these!
- Thief in the Night is still a good flick to literally “scare the hell out of students.”
- Laugh at yourself - “It seemed like a good idea at the time” is almost my motto!
- Be thankful! Each day God gives me is another day I don’t deserve. I woke up this morning deserving punishment forever in hell for my sins but I get heaven instead because of Jesus – it’s a good day!
I could go on & on, but I’ll spare y’all!
LAST NIGHT I was surprised by some sneaky people (my CSI team is still investigating the details) who threw me a 20 year party! Someone also put big facial pics of me on paint stick and they were everywhere – hilarious & scary at the same time! Then they “toasted” me! Friends, family, pastors, youth workers, etc… -it was a small taste of what heaven will be like some day. It will also take me another 20 years to live up to what was said! Honestly, this was truly from God. I had been bumming the past couple weeks, having my own pity party (attended by only me), thinking dumb stuff and wondering if I had made any impact. So I prayed a selfish prayer that God would send some encouragement. Well, He did – and to Him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine……..to Him I give credit & thanks!

Romans 16 DEVO: Friends in Ministry & the Gospel

Chapter 16:
The call to follow Jesus is a call to be part of a bigger family – the family of God. God never meant for us as believers to be alone. Type the phrase “one another” into any Bible software and you’ll see all the things we are to be and to do with “one another.” This was certainly true of Paul. He was no Lone Ranger in ministry (even the Lone Ranger had Tonto) and we see that in this final chapter. 13 times in the first 16 verses he says to “greet” someone. Who are these peeps? They were those who faithfully served with Paul in knowing Jesus and making Him known! So here goes:
Phoebe – she is probably delivering this letter, a helpful servant
Pricilla & Aquilla – Paul first met them on his 2nd missionary journey and worked with them in tentmaking. They risked their lives for Paul.
The Church – that meets at P&A home.
Epenetus – the first convert to Christ in Asia (kept track, must have been Baptist – he, he..)
Mary – she put in some hours for the Lord
Andronicus & Junias – They were spiritual relatives in prison with him for the Gospel. They were the best and came to Christ before Paul!
Amphliatus – love this guy!
Urbanus & Stachys – worked together, friend
Apelles – persevered some tough stuff
Aristobulus’ Home – yeah, tell ‘em hi
Herodion – relative
Narcissus – believers
Tryphena & Tryphosa – hard working women (also, a couple good names if you ever have twins)
Persis – another hard worker for Jesus
Rufus & his mom – believers who were like family to me
Asyncritus, Phlegon, Hermes, Patrobas, Hermas & all my bro’s with ‘em
Philologus, Julia, Nereus & sis, Olympas & all the saints
One Another – go on, kiss ‘em for me!
Paul then ends with a warning to watch out for peeps who stir up trouble by getting them to believe a false Gospel. He wants them to be “wise about what is good, and innocent about what is evil.” Good advice! Paul then gives greetings from those who are with him and finishes it off with a Gospel Doxology (ok, a praise song about the good news of Jesus)
SO WHAT?
*While serving Jesus, is your tendency to do everything on your own or do you look for ways to get others to serve with you? Independence may be the American way, but Inter-dependence is the Biblical way. It takes more time and energy to do work together but it is how God has designed us (1 Corinthians 12).
*When was the last time you THANKED & ENCOURAGED those with whom you serve Jesus Christ? Today – will you send an email, a text, a facebook message, a card, etc… and let them know?! Whenever I get notes like this, I keep them in a box (my anti-depressant box) and pull them out whenever I get bummed. Maybe that sounds weird, but it works for me, and some of y’all have notes in my box!
*Finally – Knowing Jesus & Making Him Known is a life-long process. And the more we spend time doing these two things, the better we’ll be able to recognize false teachings when they come – and they will come!

Romans 15 DEVO: The Weak, The Strong & How to Get Along – Part 2

Chapter 15:
Ok – same song, different chorus. Paul continues in chapter 15 with:
3) PLEASE GOD BY GETTING ALONG WITH EACH OTHER AS WE FOLLOW CHRIST: (1-13)
HOW DO WE LIVE LIKE THIS?

a. Bear with (1)
b. Please your neighbor (2a)
c. Build up (2b)
d. Follow Christ’s example (3)
e. Seek to glorify God (6)
f. Accept (7)
g. Be a servant (8)
h. Rejoice (9-13)
i. Trust Him (13)
Paul then finishes up with ministry to the Gentiles and his plans to visit Rome.
SO WHAT?!
*So here is how this weak/strong thing looks: GOD lays down a law or a principle. Man comes along and reduces God’s great law to some set of rules that is burdensome, and so people are no longer required to make individual choices! Then man elevates rule keeping as a mark of spirituality and judges himself AND others by it! THIS is hazardous to unity in the body! Luke 12 – “Be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees!” Why? Their opinions are becoming laws! “Traditions of men” become the standards! Why do we want rules? One reason is because rules make it easy to measure. We also fear that if we don’t have all these rules, people are going to run wildly into sin and do what they want, SO we have these rules to control people! This becomes an attempt to force people to do what is right! Forced compliance IS NOT spirituality & conformity IS NOT sanctification! Often times we don’t believe the Holy Spirit works in people’s hearts and has the power to take the Word of God and direct people into right living… instead we think we’ve got to “help Him.” I am NOT SAYING have no rules – we must, especially in the early years! BUT I WANT my kids/students to LEARN God’s principles & apply them to life!
*So – who is right? Doctrinally the strong are right. BUT BOTH groups need correction in the areas of attitude and conduct! Here are a few additional verses to look at: Hebrews 12:1-3, 2 Corinthians 5:16-21, Matthew 28:19-20. Which way do you lean?
*Finally, remember that one of Satan’s plans is to get us fighting with each other so we never get involved in our Lord’s work!

Romans 14 DEVO: The Weak, The Strong & How to Get Along - Part 1

Chapter 14:
In any local church there many different kinds of people - race, culture, backgrounds… = nothing wrong with this! The church was never meant to be a cozy club of like-minded peeps of same race, social, economic, intellect, etc… Christians don’t have to be “clones” of one another, equal & identical in all aspects. BUT this will always be a challenge! Church is made up of young, old, rich, poor, personalities, backgrounds… Other groups not like this – tend to have limitations on membership. NOT so wih the church – variety is good! (1 Cor 12)
HOW THEN do we co-exist when we are different? Because where 2-3 are gathered there will be conflict! First of all, we must define “weak” and “strong”.
The WEAK are the legalists (often new believers) who tend to look at their liberated brother/sister as too loose & undisciplined. Now, legalism is NOT the same as having convictions. God Himself is a God of law, unchanging perfect ones at that! We all have convictions we live by, and we should. But historically man has not been content w/ God’s standards, so we add to them! (Ex: Gen. 3:3 , Gen. 2:16-17) And then we make them a gauge of spirituality..i.e. “keep the rules & you’ll be spiritual” Legalism is “…the tendency to reduce Christianity to a set of rules rather than a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.” (Truman Dollar) When we put RULES ABOVE RELATIONSHIP! This can be very judgmental & eliminates the eed for people to make Biblical decisions because personal, moral decisions are being made for them. This LEGALISTIC SYSTEM RESULTS in frustration, misery and tends to produce morally weak people who live with guilt because they haven’t lived by some man-made standards!
The STRONG are those liberty/freedom in Christ understanders. They tend to look at their legalistic brothers/sisters as too rigid. Remember, freedom in Christ is not the freedom to do whatever you want. Freedom in Chris is the freedom to choose to do what is right without the “rules” being present. It’s truly understanding GRACE! So – 2 points in chapter 14:
1) ACCEPT DIFERING CONVICTIONS WITHOUT JUDGING: (1-12)
“Accept him whose faith is weak, without passing judgment on disputable matters.” So what are these disputable matters? Well, here are just a few: Facebook, myspace, movies, TV, cards, games, coed swimming, paintball, laser tag, computer games, Dave & Busters, skateboarding, clothes, make-up, jewelry, hair length, earrings, tatoos, parenting, Music – style, beat, etc…,, dating/courting, birth control, home/public/private schooling, language, Bible translations, giving, worship, food, Sunday activities, politics, debt/credit, drinking wine/alcohol, dancing, smoking, environmental issues, cloning, stem cell research, life support, drugs , Disney?, cell phone providers, United Way?, separation, Halloween, Santa Claus, yadda, yadda, yadda…
Why accept him? Because God does! (3b). And why does God? Because it was done as unto the Lord (4-10a) and I will answer to God for MY life, not everyone else’s (10b-12)
2) BE SENSITIVE TO OTHERS CONVICTIONS WITHOUT JUDGING: (13-23)
“Therefore” because of vs 12, we need to stop condemning others and making them jump through legalistic hoops. Why? Because nothing is unclean in itself (14) and when we do so we are no longer acting in love (15). So what is he goal of all of this? “Let us therefore make every effort to do what leads to peace and to mutual edification.” “These things” are the disputable matters and we are to keep them to ourselves & God (22). In other words, we are not to push our convictions on disputable matters on others. And remember, “everything that does not come from faith is sin.”
SO WHAT?
*Have Convictions! We need them! What are some of the convictions you have? Maybe write them out. Do they fall under “directly addressed in scripture” or are they “disputable matters?”

Romans 13 DEVO: Authority & Love

Chapter 13:
In living out Romans 12:1-2, two areas that can easily be abused are submission to authority and love. Authority is a reality of life and our sin nature tends to buck it. But Paul lays out some pretty clear commands in verses 1-7 regarding governing authorities.
First of all, no one is exempt: “Everyone must submit himself to the governing authorities…” secondly, God put ‘em in authority: “…for there is no authority except that which God has established.” Thirdly, you go against them, it’s like you’re up against God – which isn’t good: “he who rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves.” Finally, these authorities are in place to protect & punish: “he is God's servant to do you good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword for nothing.” As a result, we are to give everyone what we owe them!
Paul then uses this transition into the ONE THING we should owe each other: Love!~ Love is the motivation to being a faithful, transformed witness! And time is running out: “The night is nearly over; the day is almost here. So let us put aside the deeds of darkness and put on the armor of light. Let us behave decently, as in the daytime, not in orgies and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and debauchery, not in dissension and jealousy. Rather, clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ, and do not think about how to gratify the desires of the sinful nature.”
SO WHAT?!
*So, when was the last time you got busted for something? A traffic ticket? Texting in class? Stealing? How did you respond? Justify your actions or accept the rebuke & change? Transformational living requires change – Lord help us!
*Each day we live is another day we are closer to being with Jesus, and one less day to be His witness. James says our life is like a “mist” – poof it’s gone! Kinda’ sobering huh?! So, what are you & I doing with our “mist”? Lord wake us up and help us to live verses 12-14!

Romans 12: Metamorphic Living

Chapter 12:
Another incredible chapter! Paul has spent the first 11 chapters laying out a detailed description of salvation in Jesus Christ alone. He begins with “Therefore” and I’ve always learned when I see this word to as “What’s it there for?” Therefore, in other words, because of everything in chapters 1-11…..this is application – the “So What” of Romans. The first thing we’re reminded of is “God’s mercy.” You & I deserve eternal death & punishment for our sins but are offered eternal life in heaven by faith instead. We don’t get what we deserve – that is mercy. Because of this, Paul says we should “offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God…” In the Old Testament, God required the sacrifice (death) of animals to cover sin. Now we are urged to offer our bodies to God as LIVING sacrifices – laying aside our own desires to follow Jesus, which is “holy and pleasing to God.” The motivation? “this is your spiritual act of worship.” – i.e. it’s the least we can do for God who has shown us such incredible mercy!
So how do we go about living like this? “Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” Pretty cool word usage here: conform = “morphe” and transform = “metamorphe’, from which we get our English word metamorphosis. You know, where the caterpillar turns into a beautiful butterfly – TOTALLY DIFFERENT = transformed. You and I when we put our trust in Jesus are called to be totally different. In a sense we get a heart transplant and are not to be at all like we were before!
And where does this change start? “By the renewing of the mind” – how we think, Thinking always precedes doing. I’ve said it before, actions do speak louder than words, but attitudes speak louder still! Selfish, prideful, self-centered thinking is to be replaced by a selfless, sacrificial and humble thinking: “Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment…”
Transformational living involves sacrifice, a renewed mind, a sense of humility and in 4-8 in means being a good steward of our “measure of faith.” God has given each of us at least one spiritual gift and He wants us to use it for Him!
Finally, this transformational living is founded on love: “Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. Be devoted to one another in brotherly love. Honor one another above yourselves.” What follows is a list of commands that will keep us busy the rest of our lives!
SO WHAT?
*What is your motivation for living for God? According to this passage, it should be our appreciation for God’s mercy? Specifically, how has God been merciful to you? Take a moment today and write down the ways and then tell God thanks for each of them. This could be a really cool exercise!
*Is your life different from the life you lived before Jesus? Do you think like God thinks? Love like He loves? Do as He would do? Only by the power of the Holy Spirit can we. The problem with life is it is so daily. We must DAILY ask God for help to live a transformed life. Have you asked Him yet today?
*Of the commands in 9-21, which one do you need the most help with? Ask God today to help you to be transformed in that area!
